It is a mixture of hundreds of different hydrocarbons molecules containing hydrogen and carbon that exist sometimes as a liquid (crude oil) and sometimes as a vapor (natural gas). Natural gas is often found dissolved in oil at the high pressures existing in a reservoir, and it can be present as a gas cap above the oil. In many instances it is the pressure of natural gas exerted upon the subterranean oil reservoir that provides the drive to force oil up to the surface. Oil trades in barrels, while natural gas trades in millions of Btu's (British thermal units or MMBtu). The ratio translates to 10 MMBtus of natural gas per one barrel of oil. If the price of crude oil is $40 per barrel, a price of around $4 per MMBtu for natural gas would be implied (close to pre-2009 norms).
